Emerald Rugby Magazine - Functional Strongman Training #1

A new trend in strength training at the moment is “functional training”. In functional training you try to mimic the activity of the sport being performed
using some form of loading.

This sounds like a good idea but the higher the skill level of an activity, the more you can ruin it by loading incorrectly.
In the case of sprinting, the worlds’ best coaches have realised through experience that you should neither
slow down nor speed up a sprinter by more than 5%. Anything greater than 5% will destroy their running mechanics and ultimately slow them down.

Emerald Rugby Magazine - Functional Strongman Training #2

There can be manyreasons for this lack of transfer. Two of the biggest reasons can be grip strength and a lack of “Core” low back strength to be more specific.

Emerald Rugby Magazine - Grip Strength

At the moment in strength training a lot of training is being devoted to grip training and the devices that enhance the grip. Is this another fad or is it a valuable addition to the training program to increase health and performance? The evidence all seems to point to the latter.

The barbell and dumbbells, in the vast majority of gyms today, have a diameter of about 1”. In the real world nothing is usually that easy to grip when performing a physical activity.

I have now spent just over four weeks working with the ISI which has involved a comb...
